Here’s a map of my trip!
Rose made it to London, England with Paul. Does anyone know the name of that bridge in the background? I wonder where Rose will go next? Stay tuned….
*** Update February 19,2008 ***
Rose had a fun visit with Kathy in Dubai, UAE. Kathy sent along pictures of Rose as well as descriptions. Take it away Kathy!
- On my first day, I visited Kathy’s office which is on the 16th floor. I had a wonderful view of the old part of Dubai and you can just see the creek which is very busy with boats bringing and taking goods all over the world.
- Dubai does not have any trains at the moment. They are busy building a metro system but that is not ready until 2009! At the moment, people either drive, use buses or taxis. The taxis have different coloured roofs and I had a ride in a red one.
- Here is a picture of a taxi with a green roof. There are special taxis with pink roofs driven by lady drivers and they will only carry passengers who are ladies or families. Cool!!
- I visited this hotel which is built in the sea. It is called the Burj Al Arab and it is the best hotel in the world. You have to be very rich to stay there. President George Bush stayed here in January and Tiger Woods stayed here this month.
- Look at the circle just above my head….that is a helicopter landing pad!!
- The weather was so nice so I visited the local beach.
- Some of the local people here wear traditional arabic clothing. In this picture, you can see a man who is wearing a thobe on his body and a ghutra on his head. This helps the people to stay cool during the very hot summer months.
- After all the exertion, I decided to have a little nap in the sun.
- Feeling refreshed, I couldn’t resist climbing a palm tree. They are everywhere in Dubai. I couldn’t find any coconuts though.
- There are some lovely plants in Dubai even though it is mainly desert lands. I hid in this one for a while.
- This is a water park themed around Juha, the mythical friend of Sinbad. Hannah would love it here as it has lots of water slides and rides. This is very popular with tourists. Tourism is a very important source of income for Dubai.
- Time for some shopping! Look at these wonderful arabic shoes which have curled up toes. Aren’t they pretty? Too big for me though…..
- This is my friend, the shoe seller. He asked to have his photo taken with me and Kathy has promised to give him a copy which he will display in his shop. Everybody will see me when they buy shoes from him!!
- This is Jumeira Mosque and is the place of worship for Muslims. Most of the people who live in this part of the world are Muslims which means that they practise the religion of Islam. This is a beautiful and very famous mosque.
- As my trip comes to an end, I watch some gliders over the Dubai sky. Tomorrow, I will be up in the sky too in another aeroplane, heading towards another exciting adventure in South Africa. I’m having so much fun discovering the world.
*********** UPDATE March 30,2008 ***************
We finally received pictures from Phillicia and Emerald in South Africa (See Emerald’s comments from March 9). Emerald took Rose around to see the sites. Below are some pictures and captions that Emerald sent us.
- Emerald took me to The University of Johannesburg… that was some difficult stuff!
- Emerald was super happy to tell all her friends about me and share in her special day. Her birthday was at Rodizio.
- The liquid stuff looked interesting…but I was told I was underage…bummer!
- Emerald and i watched some live rugby on the tele. The pic is of the current rugby world champions badge… know who they are?
- I sure looked pretty.
- I made some good friends along the way. Check out these three guards, they look after the pool.
- The family went to the zoo, but I was afraid so i hid in a bag. This is
Jumbo the elephant at the Johannesburg zoo. - After some long days i decided to relax and unwind by the pool.
- I was lucky enough to watch some live cricket too.
- I also got to see one of the big 5… just look at the mane on this lion!!
- This is another of my friends… we had some good laughs. I think I see my twin.
************* UPDATE April 11, 2008 **************

Hi Hanna! This is Rose. I’ve arrived safely in England and Paul is going to take me somewhere nice this afternoon. I don’t know where just yet – he says it’s going to be a surprise. I hope he takes some pictures…

It’s Tower Bridge, the famous London landmark opens when a large ship wants to come through. The ship on the right is HMS Belfast, aWW2 cruiser used at the D-Day landings, The forward guns are supposedly aimed at a freeway service station over 20 miles away.

Thanks Paul! I really thought that was “London Bridge”! I need to learn my London landmarks better.
Thank you again for participating. It has been a blast watching these little guys travel around. If you know of anyone else who would want to help out with this project, please have them contact me!

February 17th, 2008 at 5:22 am
Hi Hannah, Rose arrived safe and well in Dubai today and is looking forward to some sight seeing while she is here. There is lots to see. On Wednesday, she will be flying to Qatar which is another country in the Middle East. She is much warmer than she was in England!! I will send you an update on her travels and some photographs of her visits very shortly.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:50 am
Hi Hannah, Rose is enjoying Dubai very much and will be sending you some photos tomorrow to show you some of the interesting places that she has been. She has decided not to go to Qatar on Wednesday as she has been invited somewhere which is far more interesting. It is another continent!! It is also one that she hasn’t visited!! Can you guess where she might be going next?
February 19th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Thank you Kathy! I am sure Rose had a blast with you. I can’t wait to hear from Rose when she gets to South Africa!
March 9th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Hi Hannah, I’m enjoying my journey so much. I’m in sunny South Africa and having so much fun. I got back with Phillicia from Dubai to be welcomed by the rainbow nation. I’m with Emerald, her daughter because Phillicia is a bit too busy to show me the scenery. Emerald is a teen, so I get to go out alot
. She has taken me to watch live cricket and we watched a rugby match from home. She also took me to her 18th birthday party and today I’m off to university with her.
I went to the zoo on a family outing with Phillicia, but I hide in her bag coz I was afraid of the strange noises I heard.
Emerald will send lots of pics soon.
Right now I’m off to go lounge around at the pool and make some new friends before leaving.
Miss you stax, love Rose. xoxoxo

..the bridge in London is called Tower Bridge, which looks really really really old but, unlike the Tower of London, it was built near the end of the 19th century, which goes to show that not all is as it seems. The middle of the bridge lifts when a boat needs to get through. It has been in lots of filmed car chases, you can guess what happens!
