Onions For Lunch

17 Apr

I’m sitting here at my desk, hoping nobody comes to my office. I just returned from lunch where I ate a very delicious ham and cheese sandwich. It was a very simple sandwich – white bread, mayonnaise, ham, cheese and onion! Yes, a big huge slice of the most wonderful mouth watering Texas Sweet Onion. The perfect compliment to the delicious ham. Boy did I enjoy that sandwich.

Now, as I sit here, the ever present essence of onion fills my senses. I know if I can smell the onion on my breath, anyone who visits my office could smell it. I hope nobody comes to see me today. Why did I have that onion at lunch! A mint might cover it up temporarily but I know it’s going to stay with me for a long time.

A lot of our own lives are like that. When we knowingly sin against God, it makes it that much harder to talk to Him! We don’t want to get too close for fear that He may smell the essence of our sin that we are all too aware of.

That’s what is wonderful about our God. God is a god of love and forgiveness. The Bible says in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sin to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all wrong.

Jesus’ death on the cross made it possible for us to receive forgiveness for our sin. Our sins are wiped clean, not just covered up. It’s as if they never happened. His resurrection, which we celebrated yesterday, is our hope in an eternal life with Him. It all starts with a little conversation with God acknowledging our sin and asking God for forgiveness.
As for the onion? I’m going to find some mints……
